- <p> DIED. JOHN CURRY, 44, figure skater; of a heart attack brought
- on by AIDS-related illness; in Stratford-on-Avon, Britain. In
- his prime, Curry brought a revolutionary level of artistic sophistication
- to his sport. Known to his admirers as "Nureyev on Ice," his
- performances owed as much to ballet as to acrobatics. After
- capturing the British junior championship in 1967 and the senior
- title in 1970, Curry came to the U.S. to train with Italian
- coach Carlo Fassi. His golden year was 1976, when he captured
- top honors at the European and World championships, as well
- as the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. Turning pro, he
- starred in his own ice show in London's West End. Found to be
- hiv positive in 1987, Curry freely discussed both his homosexuality
- and his advancing illness in his final years.
